John Martin 1789 - 1854
John Martin was an English Landscape Painter and a deeply religious man. He painted a triptych of paintings depicting the end of the world titled The Last Judgement.
These paintings are huge approx 2 x 3 m and dominate the viewer. We are left feeling small compared to the size and power of the landscape and the forces being displayed.
John Martin was a Romantic Painter and like Turner and Constable and the American Hudson River School (Hudson River School Link) created paintings where Man was small and Nature, Creationn and by suggestion God was mighty and powerful
